I hope it’s a big train wreck — a watchable and listenable train wreck, with no fatalities,” adding, “I wanted to have my own lotto to ensure I’d get picked. The performances will be judged by a jury of my relatives. I like my chances.”
Onstage between bands on May 28, Reis explains, “About three years ago they did a lottery at the Casbah and I didn’t get picked. I was so frustrated, I got blue balls.”
Drummer Jake Najor (Lord Howler, Styletones) awaits his assigned collaborators outside Bar Pink. On April 23, he joined the musicians throwing slips of paper with their names and “instrument(s) of choice” into a bucket. Five days later, Reis randomly drew “draft picks” that were combined into six bands with names pulled from another bucket. The formula resulted in fresh alliances. Seasoned players rubbed elbows with musicians getting sweaty palms over their debuts. Najor ended up in the Hard Cums with Paloma Ceballos of the Mad Mummies and Birdie Greenawalt.
For guitarist Sean Abrams, who’s playing with Rodolfo Bambill of the Beat-less and Reis in Leaning Tower of Shit, it’s a fledgling flight.
The judges, including Tim Pyles and Ryan Foxe, are scoring bands on “sound,” “presence,” and “songs.” Download Syndrome and Spock’s Ass earn respectable numbers. Pyles chides Hezbollah for getting onstage “late, late, late.” Stewarded by Jon Kanis on electric guitar and featuring Brandy Bell’s maiden banjo voyage, the group is bolstered by cheers. In the fourth slot, Leaning Tower of Shit dazzles like a diamond in a box of Cracker Jacks. With Reis pulling harmonies from a bouzouki and Bambill fronting and sharing electric guitar strokes with Abrams, the combo sears.
But the Hard Cums and Cro Magnon provide formidable competition, with the former taking the “punk” in Pink Punk Lotto to heart. Between formation and the play-off, the trio’s come up with “Two Pump Chump,” “Shut Up and Give Me a Kiss,” and “Maybe Baby,” which Greenawalt says is “about a boy maybe getting a chance to see my underpants.” Cro Magnon’s hard-rocking punk earns equal points. Reis prompts listeners to break the tie with an “audience odometer.” After two rounds of ear-splitting, nearly indiscernible screams, the Hard Cums snare first place and a $300 bar tab. Cro Magnon and LTOS come in second and third.
