New Point Loma High Classrooms Almost Completed
Point Loma High School will soon have 15,000 square feet of new classroom space in the form of a two-story building on the southwest corner of campus. The facility sits on a hill above where Voltaire Street meets Chatsworth Boulevard.
Due to open in February, the building — constructed with $4 million in Proposition S funds — will replace portable classrooms and include an elevator and ramp to the athletic field. Seven of the eight classrooms will offer teaching space for history and social sciences; the eighth one is to house a sports-medicine career program that will be affiliated with Point Loma Nazarene University.
On January 11, principal Hans Becker alluded to the anticipation among staff and students for the unveiling of what Point Loma High is calling "The Grand" or "The Thousands" building. A vice-principal stated, "The champagne bottles [for staff] are ready for the ribbon-cutting.”
Also due for some cosmetic touching-up: Point Loma High's row of stadium portable potties, which will soon give way to a rebuilt athletic-field restroom.
