Thursday 10
The Lady Killer, Cee Lo Green (Gnarls Barkley), is bumpin’ around the Southland circling a Sunday night Grammys date to perform with Gwyneth Paltrow and some Muppets. No joke. Cee’s a nominee for hit flip-off “Fuck You” — “Forget You” as far as the FCC’s concerned — and he will probably be rolling home with a little gold totem, as it’s one of the most infectious forgetting soul-pop ditties to hit the earwaves since the soul-pop ditties of Hayes and Mayfield were radio staples. Fluxx Live sets the slick singer up with Southland dance bands Vokab Kompany and the Nervous Wreckords for this week’s gig to get to. Limited tix available at this typing, so good-forgetting-luck.... Miss the door downtown, Texas country comes to Casbah in the form of Peewee Moore, a sanger-songwriter mining the same veins as Waylon and Willie. Him and his Awful Dreadful Snakes are out to tout last year’s Leaving Side of Gone. With Bill Cardinal and the Canyon Band setting it up, this one’s a surefire shitkicker.... Indie kids Maren Parusel and Light FM link up at Bar Pink. These up-and-coming local artists will be making the trek to this year’s South by Southwest, so check ’em out and wish ’em well.
Friday 11
Asthmatic Kitty’s Fol Chen is an L.A. act that consists of six mystery players who don disguises like raccoon eyeses and made-up monikers like “the Booksman.” Their avant-pop is no longer anonymous, though, as they’ve spent some time supporting Liars on tour, even staying onstage after their opening show to back the hard-hitting art-punk trio, which is a really big whoop. Fol Chen’s sophomore set, Part II: The New December, leans to electro-lounge with a funky feel. Dudes, who used to be Da Bears, will set the stage at Soda Bar.... Local label Hi-Speed Soul signees Film School bring Fission to Casbah. The L.A. band got a critical grin for its improved take on their chosen zone, “a terrain that encompasses pretty much anything that’s ever been released on the 4AD label or held the appellate of ‘-gaze.’” That’s good, right? Like-minded locals the Dabbers, the Howls, and Tape Deck Mountain will set ’em up, making one solid quadruple-decker band sandwich, Scoob.... Elses: From Chicago, Shawn Rosenblatt’s experimental-pop band Netherfriends reemerges at the Tin Can...Pocket brings the funkin’ jazz to Bar Pink...and REM tribute Murmur pulls into Whistle Stop. Do they have floaters so the airplanes won’t get snagged?
Saturday 12
Lots t’do Saturday, starting with the Punk Rock Record Swap at the Shakedown Bar. Vinyl, CDs, and tees to please your hardcore tendencies. That night at the Shakedown it’ll be Irish folk-punx Lexington Field with the hard-rocking Thousand Watt Stare and rehabbed Blood on the Saddle (get the goods on them from last week’s “Blurt”: sandiegoreader.com/news/blurt/.... Til-Two fills a garage-punk bill that features, from Oaktown, our furry friend Nobunny and that briny band Shannon & the Clams. The Widows, Mexico City Rollers, and Dreamdate will set the stage.... Staying uptown: Bar Pink rings the bell on Rumble:SD, featuring shoegaze-y electronica acts Letting Up Despite Great Faults vs. TV Girl vs. Dirty Gold...and Operation Mindblow sets up the liquid-light trays at Soda Bar to bend your head around the vintage tunes of the Loons, Joy, and the Fairmounts. Chad had a chat with an OpMindblower for this week’s “Blurt,” if you want to flip or click to that for the artsy farstsies.... Joel P. West’s Tree Ring will play a record-release for debut LP Generous Shadows at the San Diego Women’s Club. Portland duo John Heart Jackie, who were recently featured on NPR’s “Song of the Day” segment for sweet nostalgia take “You’ve Been on My Mind,” open the show.... For something completely different, the Hell on Heels Burlesque will prevue their revue “Tatas Through Time” at Brick by Brick. Pasties and stuff.
Sunday 13
Indie folkies the Decemberists are touring in support of their sixth studio set, The King Is Dead, a collection that released to number one on Billboard’s top 100 last month. They’ll play a Casbah-curated show at House of Blues with Appalachian she-trio Mountain Man.... Right ’round the bend, Grammy-winning Venezuelan dance band Los Amigos Invisibles materialize at 4th&B behind this year’s Not So Commercial.... Prefer to boogie to a different beat, Soda Bar sets up “San Francisco’s sweat house dance machine” Sugar & Gold with Yip Deceiver (featuring members of of Montreal) and our own beat boys Jamuel Saxon.... If dancing’s not in your plans Valentine’s Eve (that a thing?), alt-country Coloradoans Drag the River will pull out their new do, Primer, at Casbah...and for singer-songer sets, you got Cali cat Jackie Green at Belly Up...and Brooklyn boy Jarrod Gorbel (of the Honorary Title) at Bar Pink. That one’s free and totally worth it.
Monday 14
You a romantic S.O.B.? I’m a romantic S.O.B. That’s why I’m bringing my gf out on the town. On a Monday night. Even though I have to be at the office at 7a Tuesday. “Everyone should Fluxx on Valentine’s Day.” The “internationally renowned” DJ Bob Sinclar will be spinning at the downtown hot spot. Dude looks like the cover of a romance novel and is apparently really good at playing records.... You say potay-to, I say potah-to. Dizzy’s is doing a Louis and Ella tribute at the Wine and Culinary Center. Vocalists Leonard Patton and Rebecca Jade are the duet who will try on them size-huge shoes.... Soul brother Stevie and his Hi-Stax will maintain their Monday-night gig at Bar Pink...while Chilean hip-pop star Ana Tijoux bounces into Casbah behind her Grammy-nominated dance disc 1977.
Tuesday 15
From NYC, burlesque band Gigi & Pop will bring their “acoustic-electric discofied new-wave rock-and-roll fantasy” to the Tin Can Ale House. The “Three Cool Cats” will be bouncing up and down the Left Coast this month, so be sure to check ’em out: myspace.com/gigiandpop.... L.A. roots-pop five-piece Everest takes up a Tuesday residency at Casbah. Two things I think I know about this band but am too lazy to check right now: they were discovered by Neil Young(!), and the drummer is also the singer, just like Night Ranger(!!).
Wednesday 16
Portland power trio the Quick & Easy Boys ride into Bar Pink behind their second full-length, Red Light Rabbit, “an amalgamation of funk, psychedelic rock, and garage-soul with a slight pinch of honky-tonk. Imagine the Minutemen, Funkadelic, and Willie Nelson rolled into one.” My word.... Blues baron B.B. King and his trusty guitar gal Lucille will be at the Balboa Theatre downtown.... Celebrate the life and music of Michael “Stimy” Steinman (Sub Society, Inch, Congress of the Cow) at Casbah with the old guard: fluf, Creedle, Skydiver, and Sub Society.... Oh, yeah, that Yes-Toto combo you ordered is ready. YOSO will be at Brick by Brick behind their debut, Elements. Rock writer Robert Lanham says they’re the “second worst supergroup of all time.” The worst, according to Lanham? Asia. Dude’s a hater...
