Who: Evan Ray
Car: 2001 Porsche Boxster, 71,000 miles; 1960 MGA, mileage unknown
Previous cars: 1991 Honda Civic; 1972 Datsun 510
Where? About five miles to work, from Poway to Rancho Peñasquitos
Cheapest gas? Arco AM/PM, but there’s another independent place in Poway where I live that’s supposed to be cheaper but I don’t remember the name of the place.
What’s wrong with your car? It’s not a 2011 Boxster Spyder.
Listen to when driving? Usually blasting classic rock.
Cell phone? Only to play my MP3s through my radio. I loathe those who text or talk on the cell phone while driving. Get a Bluetooth.
Hitchhikers? I honestly don’t remember if I ever have.
Speeding tickets? Probably about 10 years ago. I was on vacation with my family in Oregon when I passed slow traffic on a two lane road somewhere in Oregon. I was driving our Honda Odyssey and a cop was sitting at the bottom of the hill. I think I was doing 60 mph in a 40 mph zone. I should’ve known better.
Accidents? Fortunately, never in 37 years of driving.
Worst Traffic? In my experience in San Diego, I’d say Miramar Road on the evening commute.
Most changed streets? I haven’t lived in San Diego long enough to notice any difference.
Favorite drive? The one I designed for the 2010 Rolling British Car Day for the San Diego British Car Club Council is up there. Any drive along the beach from Oceanside to La Jolla. Wynola Road on the way to Menghini Winery near Julian and Highland Valley Road just north of Rancho Bernardo are both great driving roads with lots of curves. I always pray for no other cars or cops on the road.
Least favorite? Any one where I’m stuck in traffic.
Shortcut? I feel like I haven’t lived in San Diego long enough [about 11 years] to really know a good shortcut but when they put in the 56 [Ted Williams Parkway], those of us who live in North County could cut right over to the coast in no time. It’s actually a nice drive on the weekends. Weekdays it’s pretty busy.
