On the morning of September 13, several of residents of South Mission Beach woke up and witnessed two rare sightings: a sunny morning devoid of any persistent marine layer and an animated pod of dolphins frolicking very close to shore at the south end of the bay, near the jetty.
Dolphins in the ocean are pretty common in South Mission Beach but very rare in the bay. I hopped on my stand-up paddleboard and joined the dolphins. The pod included 10 or 12 dolphins; about 4 were quite smaller than the adults. They swam under and around us gawkers on boards and in kayaks.
Many of the onlookers called SeaWorld because they were afraid the pod was in distress and didn't know how to get back to the ocean.
