In the early morning hours of October 7, flames broke out in a detached unit located on the 800 block of Palm Avenue. National City fire crews immediately responded and quickly knocked down the flames, keeping them from spreading to other structures on the property.
The 600-square-foot structure was a total loss and in danger of collapsing. It was completely filled with property accumulated over many years. An 82-year-old man who owned the property had recently passed away and two sons were still living in other buildings on the property.
The Department of Animal Control was also called, as approximately 30 stray cats were discovered on the property, many neglected; the majority were caught and taken to the Chula Vista Animal Shelter.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known and there were no humans or animals injured.
