In the early morning hours following a Saturday night in Mission Beach, pedestrians were startled by the presence of a vehicle rapidly approaching behind them on the boardwalk.
At 2:24 a.m. on March 28, Yellow Cab number 1210 was seen driving along Ocean Front Walk near Ormond Court, where the driver stopped to allow the passengers to exit. When asked why he was driving illegally along the street reserved for runners, pedestrians, skaters, and bicyclists, the driver laughed and continued driving north.
According to the passengers who exited the cab, the driver entered the boardwalk at San Luis Obispo Place and seemed to enjoy their reaction upon his entry to Ocean Front. Upon their departure, the taxi drove to San Jose Place, where he proceeded to Mission Boulevard.
Most streets in Mission Beach block vehicle access to the boardwalk with heavy metal poles secured by locks and chains. The few roadways that allow entrance to Ocean Front Walk are most frequently utilized by San Diego police vehicles as part of their continuous patrol of the area.
