A baby seal was born at the La Jolla Cove on Tuesday, March 2. Unfortunately, many birds kept swarming the mother and her pup to try to get the placenta that had yet to come out.
Many spectators stood back and watched as the mother repeatedly scared away numerous greedy sea gulls who kept hovering around her and her new baby.
For five minutes, we watched as she lunged toward the birds and bleated in an effort to protect her pup who was laying close by in the sand. She would force them to back off, then she’d check on her baby to make sure it was okay.
Eventually, the scavengers got what they wanted and left the presumably exhausted mom and baby alone. She then took her baby into the water and began teaching it to swim.
