Meds Surrender

The San Diego County Board of Supervisors unanimously voted last month to implement the placement of receptacles for safe disposal of prescription drugs. The drug-disposal boxes resemble post-office mailboxes, except they're not blue and are expected to be located at 22 sheriff's offices, stations, and substations in the county by fall.

According to the board of supervisors, chairwoman Pam Slater-Price and sheriff Bill Gore introduced the bill and it "aims to reduce the abuse of prescription drugs obtained from the home by offering safe places to surrender the medications — no questions asked."

Officials plan to collect the meds for safe destruction. A collection container is already located at the Sheriff's Fallbrook Substation. The board said the sheriff's budget and Slater-Price's Neighborhood Reinvestment Program grants will pay for the boxes.

The prescription-drug drop-off locations include: Vista Station/Vista Detention Facility, Alpine Station, Campo/Tecate Substation, Encinitas Station, Pine Valley Substation, Fallbrook Substation, Santee Station, George Bailey Detention Facility, Imperial Beach Station, San Marcos Station, John F. Duffy Administration Center, Borrego Springs Office, Julian Substation, Las Colinas Detention Facility, Boulevard/Jacumba Office, Lemon Grove Station, Poway Station, Ranchita/Warner Springs Substation, San Diego Central Jail, South Bay Detention Facility, Valley Center/Pauma Substation, and Ramona Substation.
