A man was apprehended and detained for shoplifting at Eastlake’s Target store on Thursday afternoon, February 11.
A single security officer in black pants and white T-shirt confronted the suspect after he had exited the store. When the suspect attempted to leave the scene, the guard grabbed ahold of the suspect’s arm and didn’t let go.
The white male suspect, who appeared to be in his mid 20s, tried to free himself from the guard's grasp. The guard, taller and heavier than the suspect, never let go: he strong-armed the suspect to his knees. The suspect tried to crawl and wrestle with the guard in an attempt to escape. He yelled and lost his shirt in the struggle to break free as shoppers looked on and drivers began honking their horns.
The guard was able to move the suspect out of the busy parking lot as he struggled to keep the man’s arms behind his back. Another Target employee urged the suspect to stop resisting arrest and asked customers to clear the area. After a couple of minutes, the guard pinned the suspect facedown and was able to cuff him. The suspect continued yelling and trying to move around until police arrived.
Four Chula Vista police units arrived more than five minutes later and took the suspect into the store's security office. The Target security guard who detained the suspect was dressed in civilian clothes and was not the uniformed guard that usually mans the store's entrance.
