Some last-minute campaign support came in for Eighth District San Diego City Council candidate Nick Inzunza in the form of a $5212 mailer dispatched June 2 by Vote Matters, an Oakland-based political action committee that usually backs statewide candidates. On June 2, the Seville Group of Pasadena contributed $5000 to Vote Matters. The Pasadena-based construction-management firm, comanager of the Sweetwater Union High School District’s bond program, was slapped with a $44,500 fine by the state’s Fair Political Practices Commission last year for failing to properly report campaign contributions it made to district trustees. Despite the Vote Matters backing, Inzunza finished a distant fourth. Inzunza is on the board of the South Bay Union School District…The United Food and Commercial Workers Local 135 threw its money against the council candidacy of B.D. Howard, spending $7393.20 on a mailer opposing Howard, who placed an agonizingly close third. It spent an equal amount in favor of Felipe Hueso, who made the runoff. David Alvarez, who faces off against Hueso in the fall, picked up a total of $250 from Sacramento lobbyist Juanita Martinez, as well as $300 each from Jerome, Leon, and Simon Falic of Hollywood, Florida. Simon Falic runs Duty Free Americas, the giant chain of duty free stores, one of which is located near the Tijuana border crossing. Duty Free Americas is a regular donor to border-area candidates, giving $12,000 to Democratic congressman Bob Filner last year.
