Near Town Center in Santee at approximately 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 8, witnesses in the area reported hearing a loud “boom” coming from the grassy field east of the recently opened Town Center Community Park. A few minutes later, smoke and flames could be seen spreading along the 9500 block of Cottonwood Avenue.
A nearby resident said she heard the boom and then witnessed the smoke and flames coming from the field. She said, “It sounded like a big firecracker going off.”
The resident telephoned 911, and a few minutes later, Santee sheriff units arrived on the scene along with three trucks from the Santee Fire Department. The small brush fire was quickly put out; it was contained to the undeveloped land adjacent to park land and the San Diego River, and no structures were threatened.
