A temporary fence was installed last month around the playground at Pier View South (south of the pier) to keep the kids off of the equipment. Winter storms resulted in lost sand and revealed the footings of the two play structures that are just yards from the shore.
“We lost a piece of the playground,” said Frank Quan, harbor and beaches coordinator for the city. The play area was closed in mid-January by cordoning off the area with caution tape, but it became necessary to put up a fence to keep kids out; one was set up in mid-March.
Quan said riprap was brought in to cover the exposed footings of the structures, and sand is being pumped in from a harbor dredging project. When enough sand is delivered and most of the riprap removed, the playground will be reopened. He said it could take a couple of weeks or a couple of months.
