On Tuesday, October 20, a budget workshop for the San Diego Unified School District was held in Kearny Mesa. District officials estimated the deficit for the 2010–'11 budget to be $100 million. This does not include any decrease in state funding that may occur.
The $100 million deficit is from $16.6 million in unexpected expenses in this fiscal year, an expected $63 million deficit for 2010–'11, and $20 million for budget solutions for 2011–'12 (the district is required to plan on a two-year cycle).
James Masias, the district's chief financial officer, said that it will be difficult to make cuts that do not involve people. District officials plan to set up a public education campaign to let residents know about the budget problems.
