Billy McIntosh walked from 16th Street and turned down on Commercial on Thursday, November 19. He had recently seen one cold-weather tent shelter built in the area, now he encountered another white tent going up at 14th Street.
“Wow, it looks like another shelter for us,” said McIntosh, who is homeless after losing his construction job and running out of unemployment insurance.
“Don’t get confused between the tents,” said Lisa Huff from St. Vincent de Paul Village in an interview phone call. “Our tent is for the relocation of [some of] our...clients planned for January 2010 so that we can build a high-rise shelter at the corner of 16th and Commercial.”
Construction crews are at work on the site.
“I’ve seen the building model of the new shelter,” said Steven Howes, a year-and-a-half-long resident of the Bishop Maher Center (the building that’s to be replaced on the St. Vincent de Paul property). “It’s a cross between an office building and a hotel. It’s going to be pretty cool, but in January of next year, we will move to the tent with wood walls.”
