An Orange Line trolley incurred a mechanical problem at about 6 p.m. on Thursday, November 19. The trolley lost power from its overhead electrical source as it was coming into the One America Plaza station.
The trolley came to a stop at Kettner Boulevard and Broadway, blocking street traffic. Several minutes later, cars and other vehicles on Kettner began making U-turns, seeking alternate routes.
A female security guard at the Santa Fe Depot said, “I heard something that sounded like an explosion, and I looked up and saw sparks flying from the wires overhead.”
Employees from the Metropolitan Transit System had the problem fixed within about 15 minutes, and by 6:25 p.m. the trolley was on its way. Several Coaster passengers complained to an Amtrak ticket clerk about missing the 6:21 p.m. Coaster because of the delay.
