At a community meeting at the Mission Beach Women's Club on May 12, Councilman Kevin Faulconer and Mayor Jerry Sanders announced that curbside recycling for Mission Beach would start on July 1, 2010. Mission Beach is the only San Diego community that doesn’t offer city pickup of recyclables. The additional yearlong delay is due to city budget restraints, an increased cost of recycling bins, and the necessity of purchasing a smaller pickup truck to fit the narrow alleys in the beach community.
Faulconer and the mayor hinted that some of this cost could be offset by the president's stimulus funding. Faulconer and Sanders also promised that the twice-a-week trash pickup in Mission Beach -- from Memorial Day weekend until Labor Day, due to the influx of summer renters and tourists — will continue. The service had been threatened by budget shortfalls.
