Shortly after the Padres-Dodgers game on Friday, July 3, cars and fans filled the streets surrounding Petco Park. So, San Diego traffic controllers began to enforce the ban against San Diego pedicabs operating in the area around the stadium when there are games.
At approximately, 10:35 p.m., vehicle traffic had slowed to a crawl, and two pedicabs were seen traveling south on Tenth Avenue, toward the stadium. After weaving through cars, one pedicab operator that was not carrying passengers was asked to turn around. The other, which had two passengers, was confronted by a traffic controller and told that pedicabs are not allowed to go south of Island Avenue when there are games.
Although the pedicab driver still tried to sneak his passengers past the traffic controllers, he was unsuccessful. The passengers had to exit the pedicab and were forced to walk to their destination. The young pedicab driver claimed he was not aware of the restrictions.
As he walked his bike on the sidewalk, heading north of Island Avenue, he muttered, “Damn [traffic controllers], one guy told me I can’t go past Sixth and this one is telling me I can’t go past Island.”
The Petco Park Event Transportation and Parking Management Plan on sandiego.gov states that during special events, “Pedicabs will be restricted to west of Sixth Ave and north of Island Ave to avoid conflicts with pedestrians and motorized vehicles.”
