Members of the Carpenters Local 1506 union are demonstrating in front of Pacific Honda in Clairemont using a huge banner and handing out fliers in protest of Pacific Honda’s use of a contractor with whom they have a labor dispute — R.L. Mays, a local business offering general commercial and residential construction services. The flier being handed out by union reads in part, "SHAME ON PACIFIC HONDA for Desecration of the American Way of Life.”
On its part, Pacific Honda is undoubtedly just trying to cut costs by using nonunionized contractors. And the union, on its part, is trying to promote the interests of its members in encouraging all contractors to provide or fully pay for family health care, pension plans, and industry-standard wages. The efficacy of using such tactics as a means of influencing a company like Pacific Honda to cease from hiring contractors with whom the union has a dispute remains to be seen.
