City Heights City Heights pulsed with purpose on January 16, when the San Diego Free Skool, a local activist collective, threw a benefit for a struggling Tijuana nongovernmental organization.
“CITTAC (El Centro de Información para Trabajadoras y Trabajadores) sent out a call for help, so we decided to host the event because we felt it kept in the spirit of Enero Zapatista,” said Kyle Weinberg, a Free Skool member and former AFSCME organizer. CITTAC is a Tijuana-based organization that assists in unionizing maquiladora workers.
Weinberg explained that the benefit show was one of only many events being organized to commemorate Enero Zapatista, the 25th anniversary of Mexico's worker uprising.
Local hip hop artists and the general public congregated at the Activist San Diego house on 4246 Wightman Street. The benefit raised over $200 dollars. “We felt it was a good turnout for a good cause,” stated Weinberg.
