On Friday, February 20, Albertsons corporate parent Supervalu Inc. closed the Albertsons store at East Orange and Melrose Avenues in Chula Vista. On April 9, the Clairemont store at Balboa Avenue and Clairemont Drive will be closed.
Supervalu Inc. also announced that the company plans to close 50 stores nationwide — 9 of which are in California — because they are underperforming and not meeting corporate goals.
Expecting sales to decline further, Supervalu said fewer Albertsons stores will be opened, older stores will not be remodeled, and a few stores will be renamed under the company’s low-price chain, Lucky Stores.
The supermarket chain is working to reassign hundreds of workers to other stores and predicts only a dozen or so workers will lose their jobs.
