At approximately 11:45 a.m. on February 12, shots were fired in an apartment building on Elder Avenue just east of Mar Vista High School in Imperial Beach. A 21-year-old woman was shot in the stomach by an unknown male who had walked into her apartment. As the victim walked into the same room as the gunman, she was shot. The shooter dropped the pistol and fled.
A San Diego Police Department helicopter patrolled overhead and made announcements shortly after the incident.
It is unknown why the woman was shot, but early speculation was that a case of armed robbery had turned into assault with a deadly weapon. The suspect was described as a black adult male with a black hoodie. The gunshot victim was rushed to a hospital. She was expected to survive her injuries.
