At about 9:45 p.m. on Sunday, December 13, a driver speeding down Sixth Avenue lost control of his car after taking a sharp turn onto Palm Street. The errant driver’s car hit and smashed a parked car and then an SUV parked on opposite sides of the street.
A homeless man resting nearby saw the car back up and speed away, spewing smoke and perhaps steam. He said he thought the car was a black Jetta. He said he didn’t dare approach the people inside because they were “suspicious-looking” and that some of the occupants jumped out of the car and ran away after the accident.
Another witness, “Larry,” said he was walking down Sixth Avenue when the crash happened. Had he been a bit further down the street, he said, he might have been struck by the speeding car. Angered by the incident, he called the police. Shortly after that he met another witness who saw the smoking car racing down Fifth Avenue.
