It’s been three years since singer-guitarist Ben Jerman parted ways with the Daffodils. At the time, the band played monthly gigs at the Casbah and were within weeks of recording their first EP; it was then that Jerman quit, saying he was headed in a different direction than the rest of the band.
Jerman spent those three years playing guitar and writing dozens of songs in his North Park home, delving into twangy Americana sounds with a hint of Kinks-inspired rock.
Despite having the songs, Jerman didn’t rush out to find other musicians to start a band; instead he waited until he found the right people. He found those people in some of San Diego’s other local bands, such as guitarist Alex Jones, who plays guitar for surf-rock band Monsters from Mars. Jones then suggested bringing on Monsters bandmate Bianca Batti to play bass. A few months later, John Commune, singer and guitarist for the John Foothills Band, joined on drums, and Andrew Geldmeier, former guitarist for the Apes of Wrath, agreed to play organ for the band. The five of them now make up Little Fowl.
“This time around, I found the right people, people who could play and who wanted to have fun,” said Jerman during a December 1 interview. “This time around it’s about the songs, the right amount of reverb. This time, I didn’t have to settle.”
As for getting back onstage after his three-year hiatus, Jerman says, “[It will be] nice to get the first few shows out of the way, get the nerves all out, but for me, it’s about having fun, making some noise, and getting a couple of free drinks at the bar.”
Little Fowl is preparing to play their second show on December 11 at Bar Pink with locals Jungle Fever and L.A. band Underground Railroad to Candyland. In addition to booking live shows, Little Fowl plans to record an EP at Archival Sounds sometime in January with John Cota of Rats Eyes.
