Hot Monkey Love Café co-owner Alma Felan says her establishment will be moved from its site on El Cajon Boulevard by May 1. The all-age, alcohol-free music venue may relocate to a new space in University Heights.
In an e-mail she sent out last week, Felan wrote, "We've hosted more than 3000 acts in the 3 1/2 years that we've been in business in this location. We are not ready to quit.... As many people know, Hot Monkey Love Cafe has been battling a lawsuit against our neighbor Alliance for African Assistance because of a parking easement."
The Alliance for African Assistance is a nonprofit organization that helps immigrants. A Hot Monkey Love parking lot was accessible only by driving across African Alliance property. Felan and her attorney Sandy Troy declined to speak on the record for this article.
"We have to come up with $30,000 for relocation," Felan's e-mail noted. She is asking bands to play fundraisers and asking supporters for donations.
