"Meeting Maxine Waters, Al Franken, Marc Maron, and DNC chairman Howard Dean was a hoot," says Jeff Berkley of DemocracyFest, a three-day political festival that took place July 14--16 at SDSU. His band Berkley Hart played the event's "Saturday Night Blowout." He says talking to music fan Al Franken about rock clubs in Minnesota was fun, but his favorite moment took place onstage. "Since we were the last act, we invited Laurence [Juber, former Wings guitarist] and Cindy Lee Berryhill to come up and sing Woody Guthrie's 'This Land Is Your Land' with us. The crowd chimed in and ended up the show with a very moving display of patriotism."
During "Big Bad Barbie Doll," Berkley Hart inserted columnist Ann Coulter's name in the lyrics. Al Franken reportedly rose to his feet and joined in the scathing singalong: "Ann Coulter's a big bad Barbie doll / She'll break your legs just to watch you crawl / And her heart's as hard as a bowling ball... She's got no heart, and she's got no soul / And the color of her love is black as coal."
