"Rock Star," a music page of band interviews, concert reviews, and full-color photos of local and national bands, has been published every Thursday since November by the Copley Press. The page can be found in Today's Local News, which includes sports, features, and neighborhood coverage. Published every day except Monday, the paper is delivered free to homes in Vista, San Marcos, Escondido, Carlsbad, and Oceanside. Media insiders say the U-T picked only the few North County cities in which its circulation is topped by the North County Times, a daily.
"We deliver to every home that doesn't subscribe to the Union-Tribune," says reporter Christina Chomut of Today's Local News.
The North County Times has responded to Today's Local News by running ads that show unopened copies of the paper on a lawn. The ads say that anyone who doesn't want the papers should call the publication and complain.
"I'm a teacher, and I heard from two dozen parents who said they saw the article on us," says Tom Vorhis, high school teacher and front man of the Fabulous Rudies, a ska band.
Says Chomut, "The [weekly] Coast News used to have in-depth entertainment coverage, but I think it went by the wayside." Regarding the North County Times, Chomut says, "I would like to see more local music coverage [there]."
