John Zorn has never played San Diego. The jazz sax player seldom comes out west, so his appearance at the Disney Redcat Center in downtown Los Angeles was a rare appearance outside New York. The only thing is, Redcat advertised the February 5 performance as if Zorn would get onstage with his sax and play live; in actuality, Zorn sat in the audience and watched musicians from Cal Arts perform some of his new compositions -- including one long piece for voice, viola, splashing water, and a deck of cards.
I met Zorn after the show and asked him if he had any plans to ever come down to San Diego. He smiled warmly and said, "I don't think so."
