At People For Trees, the simple idea is to plant as many "canopy trees to shade San Diego" as possible. They say their volunteers have planted over 35,000 shade trees since 1989. They like to quote Caelius Statius (220168 B.C.): "We plant trees not for ourselves, but for a future generation." They're out planting every Saturday morning, rain or shine. "We have a lot of repeat volunteers," says volunteer coordinator Mavin Davidson, "because it's so much fun." But they always need volunteers. They provide the tools and all sorts of trees, from Bradford Pears to Crape Myrtles. "Strength doesn't matter," insists Davidson. "Enthusiasm does."
