Food for the Homeless
St. Stephen's Church of God in Christ
619-262-2671
With Pastor Wilkins and colleagues, you're talking about helping people at the bottom. People who can't get into Father Joe's, who haven't made it into any programs (either through despair, drugs, or mental illness), and those who just run out of money early in the month. What you do to help is very simple: buy and cook up some chicken, maybe some fruit salad, maybe some bagels (Wilkins will tell you what is needed), then bring the food to the parking lot at 13th and Broadway. On weeknights, people gather at 7 p.m. On Saturdays and Sundays they congregate at 3 p.m. It's no picnic, but there's a lot of singing, and you don't give "anonymously." You meet the people you're giving to. You leave feeling strangely happy and sad at the same time. Location may have to change. Check by phone.
