Chesapeake Fish pickled herring at Sausage King
811 Washington Street, Mission Hills
619-297-4301
Sausage King is an amazing source for all manner of Mitteleuropean foods, from their own house-made sausages and jerky (a huge assortment) to canned German soups and dry instant spaetzle, Austrian dessert mixes, and Norwegian "caviar paste" in a tube. One of their best products, though, is local. The pickled herring (several varieties) that they sell in small plastic containers from the deli case is freshly made by Chesapeake Fish, right here in San Diego. Unlike bottled herring, it doesn't have to be pasteurized. Hence, it still tastes somewhat like -- fish. And the pickling liquids have real flavors, too, not just simple sweet-sourness.
