Gargoyle Gallery & Café
1845 India Street, Little Italy
619-234-1344
Moroccan decor with Turkish pillows, exotic lamps, tiles, inside fountain, and sunlit courtyard. This place may be in Little Italy, but it has captured North Africa beautifully. It has become a hangout of artists and downtown's loft-livers. The sandwiches basically rove around the Mediterranean: "The Italian Panini." "The Greek Panini." "The Moroccan." "The Spanish." "The French." Lots of kalamata olives, feta cheese, mozzarella, ham, and tomatoes. They also sell art and Moroccan exports. But just sit outside with your French pressed coffee (a two-cup glass pot with a steel plunger), bring out your pad, and sketch. Or write haiku. Belly dancing is featured the first Saturday of the month.
