Suzuki Rock 'n' Roll Marathon

2002's Rock 'n' Roll Marathon was everything the concept promised. It was loud and fast. After a few years of stumbling through -- understaffed and short on supplies (even water) -- runners and rockers met on this 26-miler that started at Balboa Park and wound around scenic San Diego to finish at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot. There, soldiers and spectators cheered some 20,000 runners over the line. This year's course was lined with local rock bands, school bands, cheerleaders, Team Elvis, and the Hash House Harriers, hairy guys in red dresses doling out beers to racers. Finishers were greeted with medals, a photo shoot, refreshments, and massages for those in need.
