Bikram's Yoga
2188 San Diego Avenue, Old Town
619-220-6811
Bikram's Hatha yoga is an exercise of postures, "a demanding 26-pose (Asana) series," performed in the same order every time. It's not fun and it's not supposed to be. The belief is that by repeating this regimen of poses, you will learn to "work harder, deeper, yet calmer... applying yourself deeper into the pose and beyond the physical discipline." When entering the studio you'll notice the stifling heat -- about 105 degrees. The heat limbers the muscles, loosens the ligaments and tendons, and relaxes the flesh to ease the effort of the postures. Bikram's new locations in La Jolla and El Cajon offer an introductory special of two sessions (within one week) for $10. Drop-in single classes usually cost $12, but you can buy a 10-class card for $90 or a 35-class card for $265. Monthly unlimited memberships are $115 per month; yearly unlimited memberships are $1100.
