Volunteers Of America Detox Center
1111 Island Avenue, Downtown
619-232-9343
If the San Diego Police Department finds you drunk in public (or in private, if someone files a complaint), this is where you'll likely end up, at least if they decide not to arrest you. Usually, friends are allowed to pick you up after three or four hours of sobering up. But if you become belligerent or violent, the cops may return and take you to jail. Admission is voluntary, but those who refuse are more likely to be arrested. You must be able to stand up and walk to be admitted. Once inside the doors, various three- to five-day detox alcohol/drug programs are available, charged at sliding-scale rates depending on your income level. The center is open 24 hours.
