Cactus heaven can be found on the rocky slopes of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, especially at elevations of 1000 to 2000 feet. In March and April you'll be dazzled by cactus blooms ranging from green and yellow to rose and magenta. The sharp-pointed tips of the more wicked-looking cacti effectively discourage browsing by animals -- and none more so than those of the fearsome teddy-bear cholla cactus. Chollas up to six feet in height can be found on Anza-Borrego's Cactus Loop Trail, opposite Tamarisk Grove Campground, near the intersection of Yaqui Pass Road and Highway 78. Beware: the spiny joints of these teddy-bear chollas can detach at the slightest brush by shoe or clothing or skin. A comb and small pliers are recommended for their removal.
