The Hideout Saloon & Steakhouse
27413 Highway 76, Santa Ysabel
760-782-3656
This is an old, dark, timbered roadhouse peeking out of the trees, with its own spring-fed water wheel, 3000 feet up in the mountains. A veteran biker runs the place. Hundreds of Harley-Davidson weekend warriors from around the county make it their destination. It still has a 1920s roaring fireplace at one end, a big potbelly stove at the other, a honky-tonk upright piano, and a 40-foot-long oak bar. The prime rib dinners are famous, smoked in hickory and oak, and served with a "Texas-sized" baked potato, vegetables, salad, and squaw bread. Other great dishes include a delicious "Prime Rib Chili" (including chunks of smoked prime rib, red beans, cheese, onions) and the half-pound "Posse Burger" with baked beans. Open Friday through Sunday only.
