Restaurant Afrique
4990 University Avenue,
City Heights
619-283-3838
Back in 1999, Abdiaziz Farah thought he was just opening a Somali restaurant, Afrique. But the opening revealed a desperate need in the growing Somali community for someplace to get together. Now half of Afrique is given over to the community members (all-male) who come to play cards and dominoes, socialize, wear their galabiyas, and not have to struggle with English for a while. Notice some of the men's superb beards and turbans and beautiful gnarled walking sticks. Abdiaziz will introduce you to players, and they'll explain the Somali way of dominoes and card games such as Afar Torub and Dabakeiri. Remember this is a Muslim community. No gambling, no booze. While you're here, try some of Abdiaziz's muufo bread and goat meat.
