The Prado, Balboa Park
Big Brother is everywhere, so even street performers have to be licensed by the city. On any summer day, along the walkways of Balboa Park, throngs of diverse show-biz startups compete every few yards for your attention and your tips, every one of them carrying signed permission from the city to do so. This makes for a nearly professional caliber of jugglers, palm readers, body artists, magicians, and troubadours who've worked out their own social hierarchy and staked their turfs on what sometimes seems to be every single available patch of park. Bonus: the amazing rock-stacking guy, who used to exhibit his talent at Seaport Village, was spotted operating just to the north of the Japanese garden one recent weekend.
