Bix Bettwy
For every role in San Diego theater, there are at least 50 available actors. Thus even very good ones don't work as often as they'd like (which is one reason why so many are leaving for Los Angeles). Given these odds, you can see why Bix Bettwy raised eyebrows at the North Coast Rep's first rehearsal of Arcadia in March 1999. "Boy," he said for all to hear, "I haven't worked since January." The cast forgave him, though, since he was 13 at the time and was -- and is -- the busiest actor in San Diego (so busy that February 1999 must have felt like an eternity). Bettwy has performed in How the Grinch Stole Christmas and The Merry Wives of Windsor at the Old Globe, A Christmas Carol at the San Diego Rep, also at Lamb's Players, SDSU, North Coast Rep, and Starlight. He recently played "Boy," a role expanded for him, in Henry V at the Old Globe's festival stage. Bettwy has an impressive grade-point average and, in his spare time, plays piano, clarinet, and drums.
