West end of Tecate
Where's the best place to jump the border fence? Where there is no border fence. Not that we're encouraging anyone to break the law. But in case you're asked in a quiz: the answer is right above the western end of Tecate, just north of the Rancho La Puerta spa, where the border fence simply gives out. All you have between you and el Norte is a tree-covered mountain, Cerro Cuchumá. This is California before we came, before they divided it into Upper and Lower. Warning: armed bandits operate nightly. Warning: snakes and scorpions operate nightly. Warning: Border Patrol body-heat and movement sensors planted widely. Warning: if none of these get you, the mesquite bushes with their lethal prickles surely will.
