Dive the Yukon
www.hydrodiver.com or www.loisann.com
It's a 366-foot-long warship prepped for recreational diving and sunken two miles off Mission Beach. The old girl rests on her port side, so inside you may find tables and toilets coming out from the walls and cabinetry on the ceiling. Swimming through doorways and along stairways can be a bit confusing, even disorienting. The Yukon went down on July 14, and marine life has already started to move in, so don't be surprised if you meet a barred sand bass on your way to the captain's quarters. For $10 you can buy a slate at any local dive store that diagrams the decks and access holes. Not keen on the idea of "penetrating" a wreck (technically for advanced divers only)? There's plenty to see on the outside, like the bridge, the gun turrets, and the mast with radar platform. It's a big ship; don't expect to see it all on one dive. Call local dive shops for information.
