Chopahn Authentic Afghan Cuisine
8935 Towne Centre Drive, University City
(858) 677-0100
Located in the corner of a small shopping mall is a beautiful Afghan restaurant. In its food preparation as well as its physical surroundings it is one of the hidden treasures of this city. The dinner menu is several pages, and you may make a meal from the enticing appetizers: aushak, steamed dumplings filled with leeks, topped with meat sauce and yogurt; fried pastries filled with ground beef and chick peas; bulanee, turnovers stuffed with ground beef, potatoes, and herbs; and batter-dipped sautéed potatoes covered with meat sauce. The soup, called aush, and filled with noodles and vegetables, is a meal in itself. Chopahn specializes in lamb in the form of kabobs, but the most appealing is the lamb chop loin, marinated in herbs and served with browned basmati rice. Or select the combination kabob with lamb and chicken dinner for two, which includes wine and dessert (baklava pastry or pudding with almonds), for $39.95. Exciting meals for vegetarians include pumpkin with yogurt, eggplant, cauliflower, and spinach and rice dishes.
