Urban Tribal Dance Company
Gargoyle Gallery
1845 India Street (at Fir),
Little Italy
(619) 234-1344
Exotic and hypnotic, the Urban Tribal Dance Company dresses in folkloric costumes of full skirts and pantaloons, turbans, scads of jewelry, and tribal face paint. This improvisational group of seven derives their energy from the drums, the audience, and each other. Developed in San Francisco in the early '80s, urban tribal belly dancing is an American hybrid of East Indian, flamenco, and traditional belly dance. Watch the dancers whirl and wend, leaving mere mortals spellbound. The ensemble performs monthly at the Gargoyle Gallery and is available for private parties. For booking and class information, call troupe director Heather Stants at (619) 696-3788.
