Hey, Matt:
Settle a bet. My friend swears that Citizen Kane was filmed in San Diego. I say he's nuts. Maybe he'll listen to you. Tell him I'm right.
-- The Speedster, San Diego
You know me -- I'd love to call your friend a buffoon. But in this case maybe he's just a buffoonette. A little over-enthusiastic, maybe. Or he's gotten ahold of some second-class facts. Easy to do these days. You were probably out getting the popcorn and beer during this part, but San Diego does appear in Citizen Kane. Near the beginning, in the "News on the March" segment, when you get the newsreel report of Kane's death. Most of the pictures of Kane's Florida estate, Xanadu, are a montage of shots of Balboa Park: the "El Cid" equestrian statue, Museum of Man and the California Tower, San Diego Museum of Art, and the reflecting pond.
