Dear Matthew: Why do some shoes, my left one in particular, cause their mated sock to slide down the ankle and foot and end up bunched about the toes? Is there a way to correct this behavior? — Erich Blase, San Diego
Have you tried “Bad shoe! Bad shoe!” and hitting it with a rolled up newspaper? No good, eh? Well, garters or glue may be your only recourse, because your left foot, not your left shoe, is the problem. No two feet are identical, not even those attached to the same person. One’s bigger than the other, one has a slightly narrower heel or flatter arch or crookedy toes. As a result (or because of a bum knee or a difference in leg length or some other imbalance), we rarely take matching strides with each leg. Turn your shoes over and look at the wear patterns. Odds are the left’s different from the right, and something about the way your left foot moves in certain shoes causes them to rub when you walk and gradually eat your sock. Luckily, I’ve heard no reports of gait problems making your pants slide off.
