Torpid, stagnant romantic triangle, notwithstanding the amount of locomotion. Twice a week, the titular Zhou Yu, a painter on porcelain, rides the rails to her poet lover, Chen Ching, and en route meets Zhang Jiang, a feet-on-the-ground veterinarian. The film signals a return to action for Gong Li, or anyway a return to American screens, after an absence of some four or five years, still without benefit of her von Sternberg, her Svengali, Zhang Yimou. The current substitute, Sun Zhou, is so intent on flattering his star that he falls back with embarrassing frequency on slow-motion. The objection to this is not that Gong Li doesn't deserve it, but that she doesn't need it. With Tony Leung Ka-fai and Honglei Sun. (2002) — Duncan Shepherd
