Thrillingly Biblical, in both the Old and New Testament sense. In a radioactive, post-war world, Ann Burden (symbolism) lives a lonely life, tending the valley that is her home and also maybe the last unpoisoned place on Earth. Hope for humanity (or at least company) arrives in the form of Loomis, an intelligent, decent, but unbelieving black man who dares to suggest that they tear down her daddy’s chapel to build a water wheel that will power a generator (symbolism). Soon after, a third man arrives: Caleb — crafty, self-interested, but a Christian just like Ann. Oh, and he’s white like her, too. Gorgeously shot and delicately handled by Craig Zobel (Compliance), subtly written by Nissar Modi (from a Robert O’Brien novel), and believably, achingly acted by Margot Robbie, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Chris Pine. The climax proves a bit slippery, but the buildup and aftermath are sure-footed and steady. (2015) — Matthew Lickona
