The only copy of a Harvard student's senior thesis is fumbled through a sidewalk grate and into the hands of a homeless man, who holds it hostage -- page by page -- in return for doughnuts, blankets, wine, whatever. The humble beginning gives you no hint of the heights of pretentiousness and sentimentality to be scaled: the wino, dying of asbestosis, becomes the best teacher the student and his housemates have ever had (subject: life), and in tribute they take turns reading Leaves of Grass to him on his deathbed. Goodbye, Mr. Nips. With Joe Pesci, Brendan Fraser, Moira Kelly, Patrick Dempsey, Josh Hamilton, Gore Vidal; directed by Alek Keshishian. (1994) — Duncan Shepherd
