Canadian-made anthology of women in stand-up comedy, fleshed out with off-stage interviews as well as archival footage (of Lucille Ball, Fanny Brice, Mae West, et al.) that somewhat blurs the focus. Some of the biggest names are absent: Rivers, Barr, Tomlin, Rudner, Bernhard. And the level of humor is not such that they would never be missed. On the other hand they would not necessarily overshoot the level of a smaller name like Ellen DeGeneres (non-sexual, non-gender humor on human stupidity). And Paula Poundstone is conspicuously present, and Whoopi Goldberg, and pre-talk-show-host Jenny Jones, and -- giving no boost to the level of humor -- Phyllis Diller ("My friend told me to stuff my bra with Kleenex. I wish to hell she'd told me to take them out of the box"). The format prevents any of them from really getting "rolling." Directed by Gail Singer. (1991) — Duncan Shepherd
